Tuesday, January 3 rd Come in, sit down, and get out a spiral notebook or a piece of paper and something to write with. ( no red ink) Write, at least, a paragraph informing me of all you know about the American Civil War.- I will be looking at complete sentences on this journal. Agenda: –Journal #1-Write and Discuss –Watch a video over the Civil War and Reconstruction Era –Take a quiz over the video.
Wednesday, January 4 th Remember a paragraph is 8-10 sentences. Come in, pick up a set of notes, grab a textbook, sit down, get out something to write with and a piece of paper or your spiral. –Journal #2- Romantic Hero-I will be looking at nouns. Making sure Proper nouns are capitalized and common nouns are not. You must write in class because I will be calling on some to share. Write, at least, a paragraph explaining what you think makes a Romantic Hero. Give an example of person who think is a romantic hero and explain why. Agenda: –Discuss Journal –Work on Historical Background.
Thursday, January 5 th Come in, grab a textbook, and have a seat. Get out something to write with and a piece of paper or spiral. –Journal #3- Is Anything worth dying for? Explain why or why not something may be worth your life? Give examples. Answer the question by writing in complete sentences and at least a paragraph in length. I will be grading punctuation for this journal. Agenda: –Write Journal –Discuss Journal – This means you must write in class –Discuss Literary Devices –Read Whitman’s background –Read Whitman’s Poems
Whitman Literary Devices Free Verse –Is poetry that does not contain regular patterns of rhyme and meter. –Sounds like everyday speech, more natural than rhymed lines. Cataloging –Frequent lists of people, things, and attributes. Example: The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands. Repetition –Repeated words or phrases at the beginning of two or more lines. Example: Beat! beat! Drums!- blow! bugles! blow! Parallelism –Related ideas phrased in similar ways Example: Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same. Tone –Is an expression of a writer’s ATTITUDE toward his subject. –Tone can be communicated through choice of words and details
Friday, January 6 th Come in, grab a text book, sit down, and get out something to write with and on. Journal #4 –Breaking Rules –Have you broken rules before? Why? What happened? How could breaking rules be a good thing? How could it be bad? Are some rules made to be broken? If you have a chance to get rid of 3 rules in your life, what would they be and why. –Please answer the questions listed above in complete sentences. I will be focusing on commas for this journal. Agenda: Journal, Discuss Journal, Dickinson Literary Devices, and read and discuss Dickinson’s poems.
Dickinson Literary Devices Dense Quatrains –Four line stanzas, that echo the simple rhythms of church hymns. Slant Rhymes –Words that do not exactly rhyme. Example: chill/tulle Inventive punctuation and sentence structure. –The use of dashes, to highlight important words and to break up the rhythm of the poem Irregular capitalization and inverted syntax. –Syntax-The arrangement of words to form phrases, clauses and sentences; sentence construction. –Used to emphasize words. Figurative language –Simile –Metaphor –Personification
