THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM Life Science

Function of the Muscular System  What does the muscular system work with?

Function of the Muscular System  The Muscular System!  So what does it  do?

Function of the Muscular System  The muscular system allows the body to move

What is it Muscle is made up of tissue that has long cells that contract 1.To contract, muscles need energy and oxygen. Energy comes from food you eat. 2. To contract, muscles must get a message from a nerve to do so. The message comes from the brain and spinal cord.

Contraction  Contraction means the muscle fibers move closer together which shortens the muscle

Relaxation  When the muscle relaxes, the muscle fibers move farther from each other.

There are three types of muscles:  Cardiac Muscle is found in your heart  Makes heart beat  Involuntary (

There are three types of muscles  Smooth muscle is found in your internal organs  Controls breathing and movement of the digestive system  Involuntary

There are three types of muscles  Skeletal  Allows movement of your skeleton  Voluntary

Remember  Ligaments?....what are they…?

Ligaments  Right!  They connect bone to bone

Tendons  Tendons connect muscle to a bone to allow movement

What about movements…  What is it called when you bend your elbow to show off your muscles?

Flexion  Flexion is when you bend a limb, such as when you flex your arm.

Extension  Is the opposite of flexion  Extension is when you straighten a limb, such as when you put your arm at your side.

Lets Practice!  Flexion

Let’s Practice  Now…Extension

Thought Question  You have two muscles in your arm, the biceps and the triceps. What is happening to your biceps and triceps as you flex your arm? What about when you extend your arm?
