Presidential Selection Method The Constitution + Political Parties

Presidential Selection Method Heavily influenced by political parties (informal amendment) In a constant state of change Supposedly allows for the selection of the “brightest and the best” Made up of three phases

Phase One End of previous election to 3 month before next 1.Candidates emerge from within the parties to “test the waters” and begin fundraising. fundraising 2.Parties announce date and location of their nominating convention, and assign delegates to the states. nominatingconvention nominatingconvention 3.The race within the race. States use primaries and caucuses to assign delegates to specific candidates Schedule 2012 Schedule2012 Schedule  Primary – Process is just like a general election.  Caucus – “Old fashion” process, local precinct meeting precedes vote.

2016 Republicans Donald Trump Ben CarsonMarco RubioJeb BushTed Cruz Carly FiorinaRand PaulBobby JindalJohn KasichChris Christie

2016 Democrats Hillary Clinton Bernie Sanders
