3 How do you become President of the United States of America?
List the steps.

4 Step 1: Eligibility Article II, Section 1 in Constitution
Hold office term of 4 years (2 terms) Natural born citizen 35 years old A resident within the United States for at least 14 years

5 Do you have to be educate/have a college degree to be president?
Do need political experience to be president? Do you need to be rich to be president?

6 Step 2: Pre-Candidacy Process
Are you suited for the demands the office involves?? Need to be visible (do people even know who you are?) ○ Done mainly through Political Action Committees (PACs) Raise money! Testing the water…

7 Step 3: Declaring Candidacy
Must register with the FEC (Federal Election Commission) once you receive Contributions/make expenditures over $ Within 15 days of making this money mark, you need to file a Statement of Candidacy (a campaign committee then can raise and spend funds on your behalf) 10 days of the 15 day filing… committee needs to submit a Statement of Organization Hillary announcement: Trump announcement: e2DQW0

8 Why do we need a nomination process?
The nomination process is the process of candidate selection

9 Step 4: Party Primaries and Caucuses
Primaries: registered voters participate in choosing the candidate for the party’s nomination by voting through secret ballot 1) Closed Primary: registered voter can vote in the election for the party with which that voter is affiliated 2) Open Primary: registered voter can vote in either primary (regardless of party association/membership) 3) Blanket Primary: registered voters can participate in all primaries (example: You can vote for a Republican governor running and then a Democratic Senator)

10 What’s a nonpartisan versus partisan election???

11 Caucus System of meetings (usually attracting only dedicated party members who elect delegates to represent them in the next stage of the election process) Political party announces the date, time, and location of the meeting Any voter registered within the party may attend Delegates chosen to represent the state’s interests at the national party convention Discussion and debate occurs → informal vote

12 Step 5: Fundraising and Campaigning
Make speeches, kiss babies, shake hands, pose for photographs, find other ways to connect with the “average” American Some examples…

13 Step 6: Party Conventions
Held every 4 years Determines the major parties Presidential Candidates “Places of great drama” Taken multiple votes to elect a party’s Presidential candidate in the past Now… the outcomes have been predetermined with the current system of primaries/caucuses Best moments from Hillary and Trump’s Convention speeches:

17 Step 9: Electoral College Decides
President is elected by the Electoral College Wait…. I thought we were a representative democracy??? Each state assigned electoral votes based on number of senators and representatives that the state has in Congress Meets the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December… their votes counted again on January 6th 538 electoral votes Candidate that wins 270 or more of the electoral votes becomes President

19 Step 10: Inauguration Day
At noon on January 20 Ceremony: ○ Chief justice of US Supreme Court swears in the president and the vice president before members of Congress, government dignitaries, representatives of foreign governments, and others Obama second term: POZpiFU
