A Booklet of Weather Tools How to Measure the Weather

Make your booklet…  Fold your paper in half to make a booklet, as shown.

Crease at the side.

Fold it again.  Fold it a second time, as shown, from bottom to top.

Crease at the new fold.

Open it back up to a booklet.  You should have 8 boxes available (2 on the front, 4 inside, and 2 on the back).

Number your boxes from 1 to 8.

How to make your book…  For each slide that has a HEADING IN RED, Write the heading in that box number. Write the heading in that box number. Copy the information, including the MEMORY TRICK for each one! Copy the information, including the MEMORY TRICK for each one! Draw an illustration in color of the instrument, as closely as you can. Draw an illustration in color of the instrument, as closely as you can.

Box 1 - Meteorology  Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the effect it has on weather.  Scientists who study it are called METEOROLOGISTS.

Box 2 - Weather Tools  Weather tools are used to collect measurements to answer questions like: What is the temperature today? What is the temperature today? What is the wind speed? What is the wind speed? What is the air pressure? What is the air pressure? What direction is the wind blowing? What direction is the wind blowing? How humid is it today? How humid is it today?

Thermometer  A tool used to measure temperature How hot or cold it is outside How hot or cold it is outside  Thermometers have different scales, Fahrenheit and Celsius  In the U.S., we measure in Fahrenheit! Thermometer and Temperature both start with T!

Barometer  A tool used to measure air pressure  The weight of air pushing on the earth’s atmosphere  Pressure is measured in kilopascals. in kilopascals.Think: Barbell= weightlifting Bar= weight of air

Hygrometer  A tool used to measure humidity  How much water is in the air?  Humidity is measured as a percentage of the air. Think: h=humidity h= hygrometer

Anemometer  A tool used to measure the wind speed  How fast is the wind blowing? Think: Ants= move slowly Anemometer= how fast or slow wind is moving

Wind Vane  A tool used to measure the DIRECTION of the wind, measured as N, S, E and W.  The arrow points in the direction from which the wind is blowing Think: wind vane = rooster on roof!

Box 8 – The Weather Report  Check the weather of a city you would like to travel to in the United States! Each partner may choose a different city to check the information of.  Click here for a weather website. Click here Click here  Write Name of city and state Name of city and state Current weather condition (example: light rain) Current weather condition (example: light rain) Temperature Temperature Air pressure Air pressure Humidity Humidity Wind speed and direction Wind speed and direction % chance of precipitation. % chance of precipitation.

Check your knowledge!  Read each upcoming slide.  Think of the weather instrument that would most help to measure the information the person needs.  Click to check if you are correct!

Kathy wants to measure the amount of moisture in the air. She does not want the water in the air to disorder her hair. What instrument should she use?

Answer: HYGROMETER! It will measure HUMIDITY!

Mrs. Smith plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat. First, she must know how fast the wind is blowing to see if it’s appropriate to sail. What instrument should she use?

ANEMOMETER! It will measure the WIND SPEED!

Mrs. Jones wants to make sure that she dresses Baby Joseph correctly when she brings him to visit. In order for her to know the temperature outside, what instrument should she use?

THERMOMETER! It will measure TEMPERATURE!

Mr. Snow just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it. Before he flies it, he must be aware of the DIRECTION of the wind. What instrument should he use?

WIND VANE! It measure WIND DIRECTION!

A meteorologist observes some cumulonimbus clouds outside. He speculates that there is LOW air pressure. What instrument should he use to determine the air pressure?

BAROMETER!

Carly is working on her Science Fair project. She plans to measure the amount of rainfall that has fallen in her neighborhood over the past two weeks. What instrument should she use?

RAIN GAUGE!
