How Is Weather Predicted?

Meteorologists use weather instruments to help predict weather.

Meteorologist A scientist who studies and measures weather conditions such as air temperature, air pressure, and wind speed. Meteorologist Barbie Bassett WLBT

How do you know if it is going to be cold or hot outside?
You look at a thermometer or listen to a weather report. Thermometer: A tool to measure the temperature of the air.

Barometer A barometer is used to measure air pressure.

How does a barometer work?
Air presses down on the instrument, causing a needle to move. The needle points to a number that tells how much the air is pressing down.

Anemometer A tool to measure wind speed.

Wind Vane or Windsock Tool used to find wind direction.

Rain Gauge An instrument for measuring rainfall or snowfall.

Hygrometer An instrument that measures moisture in the air.

Meteorologists collect weather data to predict the weather.

Temperature A measure of how cold or hot it is.

Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet, hail and dew formed by condensation in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Sky Conditions Sky conditions are based on cloud cover and precipitation.

Words used to describe cloud coverage:
Clear Scattered / partly cloudy Mostly cloudy Overcast

Air Mass Fronts form where air masses meet.
A cold front forms when cold air meets warmer air. A warm front forms when a warm air mass catches up to a cold air mass.
