Tsunamis Mega Waves

What is a Tsunami and How it Effects Humans A tsunami is a very terrible force. Every year they kill lots of people. A tsunami is a huge wave with tons of power. Most deaths occur after the tsunami hits. Most people drown but some are killed by the impact of the giant wave.

How They are Caused They are caused by volcanic eruptions which lifts the water up and creates a tsunami. Basically a tsunami is water in the ocean being displaced. Most are caused by Earthquakes with others being caused by meteors and landslides

Where They Occur Most Often They mainly occur in the Pacific Ocean. This is because of all the volcanoes and tectonic plates. Lots of tsunamis hit Japan each year.

Facts Did you know that the closer tsunamis get to land the slower they go and the larger it gets. They can get up to speeds of 600 mph in deep water and 100 mph in shallow water. Most scientists think it was a meteor that killed the dinosaurs. I think that could be right but what if hit the ocean a created a huge tsunami that wiped out most of the land.

Facts continued Tsunamis are normally 30 feet high but can get as big 100 or even 200 feet. The largest ever was 210 feet. It hit Siberia’s Kamchatka Peninsula 95% of all tsunamis are caused by earthquakes Tsunamis can be more than one wave and wave crests can be 5-90 minutes apart

Humans and Tsunamis There are two worldwide tsunami detection stations. They both belong to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations. One is located in Palmer, Alaska and the other is located in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Tsunamis and Humans Continued A tsunami in July of 1998 hit Papa New Guinea. It consisted of three huge waves. The waves were around 30 feet high. An estimated people died. In 1883 a volcano erupted on the island of Krakatoa. It created a tsunami that killed people.

Devastating Tsunamis On December 26, 2004 a earthquake rocked the Indian Ocean creating a tsunami that has devastated Asian countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand. The death toll has climbed over and could get larger. Over two billion dollars in relief money have raised. Around the world people are in grief.
