3 What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a giant wave that destroys areas with beaches. Tsunamis are difficult to detect until they are about to hit land. Most tsunami waves are not that much taller than normal waves, but they are much longer, which causes more damage due to flooding.

5 What Causes a Tsunami? A tsunami is caused by underwater earthquakes. The earthquake causes the water above it to move rapidly and pick up speed. By the time a tsunami hits land, it can be moving at 644 kilometers/hr (400 mph). The average height of a tsunami wave is around 6 meters (20 feet).

7 Effects of Tsunamis The main damage from a tsunami is flooding.
Tsunamis are unpredictable and hard to detect, so it’s hard to warn people to evacuate. Tsunamis usually result in a number of deaths. Because a tsunami is a wave, when it goes back to the ocean, it takes a lot of beach with it, causing major erosion.
