HOW RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISTS AFFECT DIVERSITY WILLIAM ROBINSON

VARIABLES INDEPENDENT VARIABLES THE POWER AND CONTROL OF RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALIST GROUPS LIKE ISIS DEPENDENT VARIABLE RELIGIOUS AND ETHNIC DIVERSITY

IMPORTANCE TO POLITICAL SCIENTISTS THIS IS IMPORTANT TO POLITICAL SCIENTISTS BECAUSE RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IMPACTS POLITICS AND WHAT POLITICAL SYSTEMS DEVELOP IN A COUNTRY. TO HUMANITY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO HUMANITY IN GENERAL AS DIVERSITY CAUSES A FEELING OF INCLUSIVENESS. IF ONE PERSON DOESN’T BELIEVE THE SAME THING AS OTHERS, CHANCES ARE THERE IS ANOTHER GROUP THAT DOES BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY DO THAT WOULD WELCOME THEM

METHODS TO EXPLORE HOW THE RISE OF ISIS AFFECTED RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN IRAQ POLITICAL SCIENTISTS LOOKED UP RECORDS THAT SHOWED THE RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN BAGHDAD FROM BEFORE ISIS. THEY THEN FOUND RECORDS SHOWING RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN BAGHDAD AFTER ISIS THEY THEN COMPARED THE TWO RECORDS TO LOOK FOR HOW THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE IN EACH MINOR AND MAJOR RELIGION CHANGED OVER TIME.

FINDINGS & SIGNIFICANCE THEY FOUND THAT THE NUMBER OF NON-SUNNIS IN ISIS CONTROLLED AREAS DECREASED BY A LARGE AMOUNT, THEY ALSO FOUND THAT NON-SUNNIS IN NON ISIS CONTROLLED AREAS INCREASED. THEY ALSO FOUND THAT IN AREAS CONTROLLED BY ISIS SUNNIS ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE “ONE COLOR” MEANING THAT THE SMALL DIFFERENCES IN BELIEFS ARE SLOWLY ERODING. ANOTHER PATTERN THEY NOTICED WAS THAT SHIITE COMMUNITIES ARE BECOMING MORE HOMOGENEOUS AS THEY ACCEPT OTHER SHIITES WHO ARE FLEEING PERSECUTION. THIS MEANS THAT SLOWLY SUNNIS AND SHIITES ARE BECOMING RADICALIZED AND THERE ARE FEWER AREAS WHERE THEY CAN AGREE.

LESSONS WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY AS WITHOUT IT ONE RELIGION DOMINATES ALL OTHERS AND THOSE WHO DO NOT BELONG TO THE MAJORITY RELIGION TEND TO FACE PERSECUTION AND/OR FEEL LIKE SOCIAL PARIAHS.
