Sense of Smell How you Smell Cheyenne Wright Sara Rowan Sense of Smell How you Smell
How do you smell? *Cilia, the little hairs in your nose. *Cilia, filters things that enter your nose. *After the air passes your nose, it goes through a thick layer of mucus, and then to the olfactory bulb. *There the smells are recognized, each smell molecule fits into a nerve like a key in a door. *Then, the cells send a signal along olfactory nerve to the brain. *At the brain the smells are interpreted as things say for instance fresh flowers, or moldy cheese.
This picture is demonstrating, how your nose takes in a smell and processes it through the olfactory bulb and it sends it through the olfactory nerve and how you sense it. This picture also shows you how you detect taste.
The Olfactory Bulb *The olfactory bulb is the most forward part of the brain. In humans, the olfactory bulb is on the bottom side of the brain. *The olfactory bulb is supported and protected by the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. *The bulb is divided into two distinct structures: the main olfactory bulb and the accessory olfactory bulb.
Fun Facts *If your nose is in peak performance you can tell the difference between 4000-10,000 smells. *As you grow older, your sense of smell gets worse. Children are likely to have much more subtle senses of smell than parents or grandparents. *Bloodhounds smell at least 1000 times better than humans. *Whales and Dolphins have a blowhole instead of 2 nose holes. *Astronauts in space tend to lose their sense of smell and taste. Because of the lack of gravity, their sinuses fill up with fluid, causing stuffiness similar to a cold. * The smell of lavender can help with insomnia and sleep disorders.
Summary *The Olfactory bulb controls the sense of smell, in the frontal lower lobe of the brain near the Broca’s Area. Smell is the most memorable trigger sense of the brain.
