How do we see? Light first bounces off the object to the pupil of your eye. When the light crosses the lens of your eye it flips upside down. The image shines onto the back of the eye (the retina).

How do we see? (continued) The retina contains rod and cone cells which help you see color and sharp detail. The optic nerve carries the image to the brain. Once the brain receives the image it turns it right side up.

How do we hear? The outer ear collects the sound and sends into the ear canal to the eardrum. There are 3 small bones in the middle of the ear which make sounds louder.

How do we hear? (continued) The inner ear contains liquid spaces. Sound causes the liquid in the cochlea to move around. The receptor cells tells to auditory nerve to send a message to the brain. This gives meaning to the sound.

How do we taste? Taste helps you determine what flavor your food is. There are four different kinds of taste buds-sweet, sour, bitter, and salty.

What is touch? Touch is when you have physical contact with another object. Your skin has clusters of touch receptors that resemble onions or jelly material. The receptors cause an electrical nerve to respond to the sense of touch.

How do we smell? When we breathe in air travels through the nasal cavity. We have shelves of bones that cause the air to flow down your throat. Part of that air goes through the olfactory organ. Molecules that contain odor will past through and attach to the mucus in your nose.

How do we smell? (continued) Your nose contains sensory hairs that sense the odor and then it sends a signal to your brain. Your brain recognizes the smell.

Group Project In groups of four do research using the following website on one of the senses and make a poster containing five important facts to teach your classmates. This project is due in two weeks. www.mediaspin.com/fivesenses/
