Where does governments power come from? A CONSTITUTION gets its power from THE PEOPLE

What does a constitution do? A constitution should… State the powers of the government Set limits on those powers Governments should not be able to abuse the rights of citizens

How are laws decided on? The courts decide whether a law or policy is against the constitution The US Constitution, like many constitutions also has a way to be changed or amended over time

How are the people protected? The first 10 Amendments to the US Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights The Bill of Rights are additions to the Constitution that protect the rights of the people As of today, there are 27 Amendments to the US Constitution

What rights do the people have? Freedom of:  Religion  Speech  Assembly  Press  Petition

What rights do the people have? Right to bear arms No QUARTERING troops in private homes housing

What rights do the people have? No unreasonable searches and seizures Right to a speedy trial with a jury if accused of a crime

What rights do the people have? No excessive bail and no cruel and unusual punishment

Is that all the rights people have? If its not the US governments job – then it is the job of state and local governments There may be some rights that people have, but the Constitution did not mention them
