T. Matsushita 1 News Ribbons - i Inspection at IC All five ribbons have production date Two ribbons have mold ID + production ID (e.g. mold4#1) One ribbon has just mold ID Ribbon 115 Aug 06mold4#1 top/bottom centre marked Ribbon 214 Aug 06mold3#1 top/bottom centre marked Ribbon 317 Aug 06??????? bottom centre marked Ribbon 422 Aug 06mode4#? bottom centre marked Ribbon 528 Aug 06??????? bottom centre marked Two ribbons have both top/bottom centre fibres labelled We found our definition of top and bottom is different; At IC, we call teflon sheet side top. top - IC top - FNAL which is centre?

T. Matsushita 2 News Ribbons - ii Inspection at IC Extra piece of fibre (~2cm) on one ribbon Fibre end trimmed evenly at FNAL. But not good enough for QA procedures Prominent round ridge of glue; might be a problem when we glue it on carbon fibre station Two bent fibres on ribbon 5; during transit? Before After trimming Fibre end Ridge of glue Bent fibre

T. Matsushita 3 News ribbons - iii One ribbon with two bent fibres (ribbon 5) chosen as a test layer for bundling/connectorisation/QA commissioning Teflon sheet taken off Fibre end trimmed evenly Top centre fibre marked Template to cut excess mylar sheet ready Todo: Carefully cut excess mylar sheet without damaging mirror/fibres Find bottom centre fibre Start bundling More updates foreseen by plenary session. Excess Mylar Template to cut mylar sheet

T. Matsushita 4 QA – bundling/connectorisation Purpose Ensure each bundle has correct seven fibres No more/no less fibres in a bundle No swapping of fibres across bundles Ensure each bundle goes to correct hole of optical connector No more nightmare of channel decoding Methods Take picture of fibre bundle to count number of fibres in a bundle Take movie of fibre scan with UV LED to check sequence of fibres Visual scan of unused fibre in the middle of bundles Team IC; Aron, Ash, Geoff, Ken, Maiko, Roger, Takashi Brunel; Henry, Paul, Peter

T. Matsushita 5 QA – bundling/connectorisation Setup side view front view Translation stage LED/optics Doublet layer CCD Beam spot image by CCD 50 micron x ~4mm (not this size on doublet layer)

T. Matsushita 6 QA – bundling/connectorisation First we make bundle of seven fibres that corresponds to single read-out channel “comb” is used for bundling and QA procedure QA image for one connector worth of bundles comb Comb with bunldes in grooves

T. Matsushita 7 QA – bundling/connectorisation Second we thread bundle through each hole of connector Fibre radius guide is used for connectorisation “bridge” is used for QA bridge Fibre radius guide Bridge with connectors QA image for one connector

T. Matsushita 8 QA – fibre counting by software 1. Take CCD image of comb/connector 2. Find bundles: Nearest Neighbour Clustering of pixels, merge clusters then cut small cluster 3. Find fibres in each bundle: “Fuzzy C-Means Clustering” assign each pixel to given number of clusters, 7, then check quality of clustering Can help human fibres in a bundle Spotted by software

T. Matsushita 9 QA – sequence check Part of scanning movie is extracted below; swapped fibre between bundles can be seen in frames # ! x y Correct sequence of bundles for scanning Centre of illumination (intensity weighted mean position) Wrong bundle sequence Fibre swapping

T. Matsushita 10 Status Bundling/Connectorisation/QA commissioning with doublet-layer starts today After the commissioning, start station five assembly
