Scintillating Fiber and Ribbon Production Update Alan Bross MICE Tracker Phone Meeting September 8, 2006

Status  Ribbon Mirroring continues. 21 runs have been mirrored and 14 runs have now been analyzed (7 in queue need to be analyzed) u Mean R = 76% RMS=6% (Approx. 160 measurements)

Mirroring Status  From Eileen u Fibers cut in half 32,500 of 37,500 fibers provided by Kuraray u Fibers (~50cm L) polished and quality checked 59,473 -121 polish operations ( 962 fibers rejected or 1.6% polish rejects) s Fibers polished and not qualified 4,000 fibers -polish pipes #122 to 129 u Fibers stuffed into hex pipes and frozen ready to be polished 5,000 fibers - polish pipes #130-139 u 21 Sputtering Groups (S1 to S21) have been mirrored 18,190 fibers s (minus 20 fibers per sputter group, S2, S3, S5, S7, S8, S9 and 10 fibers per group S10 to S19; S1, S4 and S6 were all used for special testing for a total of 310 fibers tested; also minus after sputtering rejects by Thin Film Group totaling 227 or 1.4% rejects) thus 15,623 have been packaged for transport to Lab 3. u Lab 3 has taken delivery of 11,761 fibers (includes up to S15) and upon their review rejected 312 fibers (2.65%) u 37 sputtering groups have been assembled into levels (34,090 fibers); of which 24 sputtering groups have been stacked and prepped for vacuum installation (21,190 fibers). s Of these 21 have been sputtered as mentioned above

Ribbons  The 5 Pre-production ribbons are complete and ready for shipping to IC (ETA @ IC 9/15/06.

New Ribbons  My observations: u Overall the ribbons look good and very uniform. u Upper and lower layers separated with a plastic film taped to lower fiber layer u Fibers cut to even length u Ribbon ID – Mold ID + Production date  Some Issues u The center fiber of the bottom layer is marked with a pieced of masking tape – the fiber was not colored black. This probably can be done with care at IC. This will not happen with the rest of the ribbons. Removing the masking tape from the end of the center fiber should be done with caution. Maybe use a little ethanol on the tape to loosen the adhesive and then pull it off. s On a few of the 5 ribbons both the center fiber on the top layer and bottom layer were marked thusly. u Caution needs to be exercised when removing the blue tape that holds the fibers in the top layer u There was some excess glue at edges. This ran along fiber. Fibers may have to be separated from the glue when the bundling and threading is done. s Should not be too hard

New Ribbons II  Obviously take care in handling the ribbons  Feedback regarding the assembly procedures, layer ID and separation, center fiber, etc will be appreciated.  We anticipate starting full production the first week of October. u This will allow the IC crew to evaluate what they see and then give us feedback before proceeding
