IPAD PROPOSAL There’s an App for that !! Angeleria Willis ITEC 7400 Kennesaw State University

The iPad can and will create : 21 st Century Learner Engaging Authentic Experiences educational apps at your finger tips cool learning experiences homework thinking outside the box CREATIVE CREATIVE technology vs. textbooks development Increases reasoning skills interactive Change your thinking Change your thinking

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Originality Staff and students will recognize the fuel that drives the present day global economy in turn, its significance in both student learning and the school atmosphere. Kimberly Elementary School will create a an environment that sustain and strengthen innovation for students learning and creates opportunities for creativity. Students will explore and collaborate using applications from the iPad and teacher provided material. Furthermore, the teaching and learning environment will produce the constant progress of these skills.

Rationale? Why iPads? iPad inspires creativity and hands-on learning with features you won’t find in any other educational tool — on a device that students really want to use. Powerful apps from the App Store like iTunes U and iBooks let students engage with content in interactive ways, find information in an instant, and access an entire library wherever they go. iPads will help teachers and students meet instructional needs while contributing to school wide implementation of technology and sharing of information and solid statistics of its result with the schools districts, parents, and teachers.

What goal are we reaching? Create and execute a method of transportable learning with the iPad. The iPad will allow children different options and learning tools for student knowledge and attaining educational goals. Kid Tested Experts Approved Many studies have shown the effects the iPad have on learning. A research study, performed in Auburn, Maine demonstrated that Kindergartner students using iPads scored higher on literacy tests than students that didn’t use the tool. University of California Irvine medical school reported iPad equipped medical students scored 23 percent higher on national examination than on earlier unequipped classes. A study from KIPP Academy in Houston, TX showed the percentage of students who rated proficient or advanced (the 'passing' rate) was 49% percent higher in the 'flipped classrooms' using the iPads than in the traditional classrooms with no iPads. In a study complete by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in California explain that students using iPads saw their math test scores boost 20% in one year compared to peers using traditional textbooks

Meeting the needs for all learners? There’s an app for that ! Vision. VoiceOver is the world’s first gesture-based screen reader for Mac and iOS devices. It lets users who are blind or have low vision know what's happening on their device. And helps them control it. Hearing. Those who have hearing or speech difficulties can communicate nonverbally via FaceTime video calls using sign language and every facial expression from wink Physical and motor skills. People with physical and motor challenges can use AssistiveTouch in iOS to enter common Multi-Touch gestures, like pinch, with just one finger. Learning and literacy. Guided Access in iOS helps those with attention deficits or other cognitive disabilities stay focused on a single app.

Why iPads? There’s an app for all instructional needs. McGraw-Hill, Pearson Education, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt — the publishers in charge of the bulk of K-12 content in the US — have created Multi-Touch textbooks available now from the iBookstore. iPads are interactive and engaging. Studies show students do better on standardized test when using the iPad whereas their counter parts score lower. iPads are less expensive than laptops. Helps students become 21 st century learners. All students are able to use the Ipad.

Limitations There is trouble reading the latest Microsoft Office formats (.docx, etc.) on the iPad There is no USB port. Without Wi-Fi the Ipad or apps can not be used properly. Limited security features so apps can be deleted due to the iPad being touch sensitive. However, the Apple productivity suite (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) that is parallel to MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) reads/converts docx files into Pages, and files can then be worked on. However, all documents, pictures, i- tunes, and notes are saved in i-clouds Kimberly ES is equipped with both Wi- Fi and Ethernet. If the Wi-Fi stops working, *APS has trained tech specialist to fixed problem with a quick call to client support.

Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Issues to remember When purchasing apps on the iPads, you can not purchase just one app once and then sync it to all the devices you own, if the devices are going to be used by more than one person. Children should be restricted to a limited numbers of hours in the classroom, because looking at the screen to log can cause headaches and bad sight. We will make sure when students are using iPads, they are not exposed to dangerous sites or apps, therefore the surfer will have filters. In ethical circumstances, the iPad appear to be overshadowing the Web and the book publishing industry. It is simple to be compensated for the information that an owner might place on the iPad, as opposed to the Web. People will find this as a great way to make more money and publish less content.

Support at your finger tips Apple offers a range of Professional Development workshops in leadership, basic skills, curriculum integration, and more free of charge. Apple hands-on workshops are held at your school or district site and they’re designed to make sure you’re using your Apple products most effectively to transform teaching and learning. Apple makes both the hardware and software for every product. Apple Technical Support Specialist is available 24 hours a day for any trouble shooting. Apple will also trained Kimberly’s Technologist Specialist for to trouble shoot any problems that might arise.

Funding In an effort to fund Ipads, $6,000 dollars will be taken from Title I funds. The technology specialist will write grants to our partners at : Georgia Tech CEISMC and Georgia State University. Students will participate in cookie dough sells Kimberly Elementary School will receive $5.00 dollars for each box

REFLECTION iPads offer many apps from the apps store to increase learning and engagement. Learning is just one touch away. Applications are available in every subject. Students are excited and motivated to learn. After writing this proposal, I believe iPads will inspire hands on learning and creativity with numerous features that are not available any where else. Students will take charge of their learning by exploring content in an engaging way. The iPad is a great tie between education and technology. There’s an app to meet the needs of all learners.
