Current Industry Environment Still a world leader but many challenging forces are reshaping the environment in which the sector is operating – need a different sort of supply chain Shorter product lifecycles – end of blockbuster New ways for assessing and approving medicines – many changes Increasing emphasis on personalised outcomes New models of delivering healthcare – e.g. healthcare into the community Importance of emerging markets - potential Public scrutiny increasing – need to manage risk and compliance/competence Tougher environmental controls and regulations

Looking ahead… We need to: Think creatively on products Innovate to survive globally Open up the NHS to industry – partnership on skills Collaborate on research - attractive to private investment Develop an industry that is fit for the future Skills and competence are part of the solution – to innovate, support compliance and to form bridge with NHS

Our progress Four working groups drive our plan: apprentices, SMEs, career pathways and placements – employer-led Great progress via the groups HAs taking off – exciting new route New Skills Gateway tool – consultation underway Clusters are supporting our work as conduits to SMEs Bid shaping up for placements and mentoring New publications in research, Helix magazine Suite of new video films – including HA case study (Takeda) Life Sciences Skills Awards – HoC launch Taking the message out to events – our own Breakfast Briefings Partnerships – with societies and professional bodies
