Station-4 MuID System: Status Ming X. Liu Los Alamos National Lab 1/7/091E906 Collaboration Meeting

2 E906 Spectrometer: Bend plane view Muon ID layers start here, 2X and 2Y ~250*250cm 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

Our Current Plan Use drift tubes built by LANL Muon Radiography Team – Already built and LANL – Available for E906 Installation and this year – Installation, optical survey and cabling – Interface to DAQ CAMAC-based TDC “LeCroy 3377”, E906 common items (12) – Gas system Ar + Ethane through an alcohol bubbler (4) Flow rate: ~ 1SCFH ~25CF per plane – HV and LV ~+2500V, total 4 channels +5/-5.2V, ~1A per module/channel, total 24 channels – Calibration and monitoring I, V, T … 1/7/093E906 Collaboration Meeting

4 Drift Tube Module from Muon Radiography A module consists of 2 staggered rows of 8 tubes, 16 tubes total ~ 4” X 16” X 12’ Each tube is 2” X 12’ with 20  sense wire at +HV Each module is readout with a Nanometrics N-277 amp/disc card using +-5V power Close-up of one 16 channel module 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

5 Station 4 Muon Identifier Design 2 X and 2 Y layers, coverage ≥ 250 * 250 cm Aluminum drift tubes for good position resolution  track matching to Station 3 drift chambers Each plane constructed of 2 staggered rows of 2” diameter tubes for excellent efficiency and reasonable channel count Nanometrics amplifier / discriminator electronics with ECL output. Well tested design with 1000’s of operational tubes. Works with a variety of gas ~ +2300V  End view of a 16 tube module 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

6 Existing N277 Nanometrics Amplifier / Disc. Differential ECL outputs 16 Channels / card +-5V power, 6 watts Poor crosstalk but otherwise good performance 56 drift tube modules are instrumented with N277 cards Input 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

7 μRad Large Muon Tracker at LANSCE 6 X and 6 Y layers 48 Modules visible Arranged for vertical cosmic ray muons Disassembled and in storage for E906 Will need new support structure for E906 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

8 Measured Performance with Cosmic Rays Gas : Ar - isobutane 70:30 HV = +2300V ~300 micron resolution averaged over entire array ~99.5% efficiency, consistent with tube wall thickness Maximum drift time ~ 1600 ns with this slow gas Nanometrics amplifier / discriminator electronics, threshold set to 1 Volt. 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

9 Summary Module and Channel Counts Target 2 nd magnet 1 st magnet p ++ -- sweep momentum analysis 4 planes required for E906: 2 X and 2 Y, ~250 x 250 cm area 6 modules per plane provides 244 x 366 cm area 384 total channels of electronics, 4 channels of +HV and 24 for +/-LV 24 modules required, have 56 available with electronics Could increase size of station 4, if useful 1/7/09E906 Collaboration Meeting

Issues and To Do List Mechanical supporting structure for vertical installation – Design and material: ~10k – when and where: Fermilab shop this summer? Before shipping to Fermilab – Electrical test of all modules, ~1week early this year – U-Haul truck, this – Mechanical installation, cabling etc, need help on manpower – Optical survey, ~1mm precision – Interface to DAQ, signal delay etc. Needs help from DAQ group – Gas system, HV and LV PS.. Fermilab pool? Calibration, monitoring and offline code – Slow control system to monitor I/V/T … 1/7/0910E906 Collaboration Meeting
