Childhood In Eli’s childhood he took apart household items to see how they worked. He once took apart his father's watch and was able to put it back in perfect working order. At age 12, Eli Whitney created a violin, and before he entered college, he had his own business selling hatpins and walking sticks.

Eli Whitney Eli Whitney went down in history as the inventor of the cotton gin, a machine made to extract seeds from cotton, patented in 1794.

Cotton Gin The implement or machine used to pull the cotton fibers from the seed. Southerners saw cotton as cash that would help the economy. His cotton gin insists of rollers with wire teeth set inside a box. As the rollers turned they pulled the cotton from the box left the seeds behind. He built the machine in 1793.
