U.S. History Project By: Brett Hively & Caleb Maxam Famous People Who Made a Change in History: Eli Whitney, Samuel Slater, & Francis Cabot Lowell

Eli Whitney Eli Was born in Westboro, Massachusetts on December 8 th,1765 and died on January 8 th, 1825. He was an inventor of the cotton gin and a pioneer in the production of cotton. He also produced interchangeable parts to assemble a gun more rapidly.

Eli Whitney (cont.) Eli invented the cotton gin to try to decrease the amount of slaves needed to produce cotton. He was hoping he could end slavery after all. However, he only made slavery worse because once cotton became easier to clean the plantation owners planted more cotton and bought more slaves.

Eli Whitney (cont.) The cotton gin was a great convenience, because it reduced the amount of time needed to produce cotton. At an estimate with the cotton gin about 50 pounds of cotton was produced a day by one slave.

Samuel Slater Well, first of all, he was named the “Father of the Industrial Revolution”. He was born in Belper, Derbyshire in England on June 9 th, 1768 and died on April 21 st, 1835 at the age of 66.

Samuel Slater (cont.) The reason he was named the “Father of the Industrial Revolution”, because he brought British textile technology to America. Slater was an apprentice to a pioneer in the British industry. For that is how he figured out the production of a textile machine.

Samuel Slater (cont.) It is mind-blowing, because he did not have any written documents or charts on how to produce the machinery. It was all fixed in his head.

Francis Cabot Lowell Francis was born on April 7, 1775 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He died at the age of 42 on August 10, 1817, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Francis Cabot Lowell (cont.) Francis was a very successful business man. He decided to build a water-powered loom based mill like one he had seen in England.

Francis Cabot Lowell (cont.) Later on Francis built a larger mill in the town later called Lowell. This mill was an all in one mill, that could complete all the steps to make clothing under one roof.

Effects All of the previous men had a great effect on our country. The cotton gin made cotton much easier to cleanse. This helped the Slater mills and the Lowell mills, because they had more cotton to make their products with.
