Today – Literature Circles Monday – Review Day Tuesday – Quiz on Acts I-III Look Ahead:

Essential Question for your Literature Circle Book: How does the cultural context of a work of literature impact the choices characters make?

o To examine the elements that define culture o To understand what the cultural context of a work of literature might be

Culture can be defined by several factors: o Gender o Religion o Ethnicity o Social status/ economic situation o Age (youth culture) o Physical environment/setting (time and place) o Social norms/expectations of the time o Anything else?

Agenda: PURPOSE: The purpose of this task is to answer the following essential question: How does the cultural context of a work of literature impact the choices characters make? TASK: For this assignment, you will create a claim to answer the essential question above by annotating for cultural contexts within your literature circle book and researching the most relevant cultural contexts. You will support your claim by analyzing the connection between evidence from your group’s literature circle text and evidence from THREE informational sources found through research. Then, as a group, you will present this information to the class in the form of an oral presentation. The reasons you select for your claim should be based on ONE of the following options: 1. THREE cultural contexts that affect character choices 2. THREE elements of ONE cultural context that affect character choices (this is the more challenging option) Your group’s completion of this task will be assisted by: - Weekly post-it annotations - Weekly literature circle group meetings - Dialectical Journal entry - Guidance on how to effectively conduct research, organize a presentation, and deliver an oral presentation Summative Assessment : Contextualizing Character Choice Through Cultural Perspectives
