Logical Division of Ideas

Logical division of ideas? Is a _(pattern of organization)_ used to divide a topic into _(points)_ that can be discussed separately. These types of paragraphs are often found on tests like TOEFL Logical division of idea paragraphs should be _(clear)_ and _(easy)_ to follow.

Sample Topics _(reasons)_ for owning an ipad/car/xbox _(kinds)_ of shoppers/teachers/friends -(types)_ of books/movies/games _(advantages/disadvantages)_ of being an only child/having a car/being single _(qualities)_ of a good friend/mom/boss

What is Coherence?

Coherence allows a reader to _(follow)____ your ideas easily Coherent paragraphs flow __(Smoothly)__ from __(beginning)___ to end Sentences in coherent paragraphs should lead one sentence __(naturally)__ to the next sentence.

How to make your writing Coherent…

Use noun and pronoun __(consistency)__ Use __(Transitional Signals)__ to show relationship between ideas Put your ideas into some sort of __(order)__ such as logical division of ideas.

Consistency Nouns and pronouns need to be consistent If a sentence uses a plural noun, it must continue to use a plural noun. Pronouns: do not change pronouns. For example, do not switch from you to they or he for no reason. If you use the pronoun “you” at the beginning of the paragraph, continue to use it throughout the rest of the paragraph.

Awkwardness… Sometimes when writing about both genders it’s best to use a _(plural)_ noun. Plural nouns make the _(pronouns)_ easier to use throughout the rest of the paragraph.

Which sentence is easier to read? “A student needs to turn in his or her assignments on time.” or “Students need to turn in their assignments on time.”

Transitional Signals

Transitional Signals Words or phrases that _(connect)_ the idea in one sentence with the idea in another sentence. These signals are another way to give a paragraph _(coherence)_. Examples of some expressions are: “first/second, after that, finally, similarly, in addition, on the other hand, etc.”

Transitional Signals can be used as… _(sentence connectors)_ _(coordinating conjunctions)_ _(others)_ (Refer to the chart on page 84 of your book.)
