Background Vienna Declaration 2006 presented at the informal conference of Health Ministers at the formal Council in June 2006 Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is rapidly increasing IFG and risk factors of type 2 diabetes rapidly increasing in Mediterranean region

Mission The project develops and implements strategies for assessment, prevention and communication to respond to increasing non-communicable disease threats, particularly type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Mediterranean region

Aims of the project  To assess the prevalence of glucose metabolism disorders in the Mediterranean region  To assess the impact of lifestyle interventions according to baseline lifestyle habits and biomarkers related to glucose metabolism disorders  To develop and implement a novel intervention and communication program for people at high risk for T2D  To implement the new European Guidelines of T2D Prevention in the Mediterranean region  To develop a curriculum for health professionals and to train them T2D diabetes prevention  To assess the direct costs of T2D prevention in primary care

Methodology MED_PLAN consists of 10 workpackages (WPs) Integrated into three large EU projects –IMAGE project (Munich/Dresden) –DE-PLAN (Helsinki/Madrid) –InterAct (Cambridge)

Work packages (I) WP 1: Steering Committee, coordination of the project WP 2:Baseline survey. Assessing the prevalence of glucose metabolism disorders in the Mediterranean middle-aged population WP 3:Development of a curriculum in diabetes prevention for the training of prevention managers WP 4:Mediterranean region diabetes prevention guidelines WP 5:Training prevention managers for primary health care system

Work packages (II) WP 6:Identifying people at high risk for T2D and implementing the intervention WP 7:Interventions, biomarkers and lifestyle factors WP 8:Creating diabetes prevention e-portal WP 9:Economic evaluation of diabetes prevention WP 10:Qualitative evaluation of diabetes prevention activities
