Fundamentals of Nud*ist 6 Overview for Nursing Faculty May 2003 by June Kaminski, MSN

Tasks done with Nud*ist 6 Data Collection Start New Project Import Data Identify Themes Annotations Memoing Text Searches String Searches Pattern Searches Manual Coding In Vivo Coding Cluster Themes - tree nodes Latent analysis Text/Visual Display of Final Report

Collect & Import Data Collect qualitative data eg focus group, survey, dialogue Import all data into New Project as txt or rtf files and save Browse your data documents within Document Explorer

Identify Themes Determine Text Unit Annotations within text record observation Memos record personal thoughts, memos, reminders Themes are clustered into Free Nodes

Methods for Identifying Themes Word Repetition Indigenous categories Keywords in Context Compare & Contrast What’s Missing? Metaphors, Analogies Transitions Connectors Unmarked text Pawing through text Cutting & sorting for sub themes

Searching Searching is done as: TEXT Searches that can be further divided into: STRING Searches - a sequence of characters PATTERN Searches - eg want/need/desire

Cluster Themes into Tree Nodes Create Tree Nodes by clustering Free Nodes in the Index Tree View & manipulate nodes in Tree Display Window = a powerful hierarchical index system for analysis

Latent Analysis Tables are possible to display Cluster Analysis of findings Matrix analysis can be done to display category & node data

Final Report Narrative summary of identified themes, memos, annotations Table summary of theme and subthemes Matrix summary of categories
