2 Changes in functions and structures of states and in attitudes toward states and political identities (political culture), including the emergence of the nation-state (types of political organization).

3 During the 5 th century, in the midst of invasions and threats, a new emperor emerged in the Byzantium Empire. Emperor Justinian was a somber and autocratic emperor.

4 Justinian rebuilt Constantinople. He allowed the construction of one the Christian wonders of the world, the Hagia Sophia. Constantinople became one of the major centers of trade in Europe. Justinian systemized the Roman legal code, Justinian’s Code. He had many military gains.

5 It was the first part of Corpus Juris Civilis, the Body of Civil Law, first completed in 529, but wholly in 534. Justinian organized the Roman laws and set a base for future laws followed today. It set up: Public and private laws Natural, National, and Civil A system of consultation The voting of the people A constitution The edict of magistrates Ended up creating a legal system that was the beginning of the modern system today.
