Standards Classification-The Kingdoms How much do you know about our modern classification system? Click on the pictures to the right to learn about each modern kingdom! Take the Quiz

SC-HS-3.4.7 Students will: classify organisms into groups based on similarities; infer relationships based on internal and external structures and chemical processes. Biological classifications are based on how organisms are related. Organisms are classified into a hierarchy of groups and subgroups based on similarities that reflect their relationships. Species is the most fundamental unit of classification. Different species are classified by the comparison and analysis of their internal and external structures and the similarity of their chemical processes. Kentucky Teaching Standards: Core Content For Assessment

Terms with which you should be familiar… Carolus Linnaeus- father of modern taxonomy; created a 5 kingdom system into which all organisms are individually placed (click here for more information on Mr. Linnaeus)here Kingdom -least specific grouping; general breakdown of an organism’s place in classification Taxonomy- the branch of Science in which organisms are grouped based on traits, characteristics, and/or evolutionary histories (for more information on taxonomy, visit NCBI-Taxonomy)NCBI-Taxonomy

To learn more about the father of modern taxonomy, watch the video below!

Kingdom: Plantae multicellular plants photosynthesis= energy more than 350,000 species known (such as flowers, mosses, ferns, trees)

Kingdom: Bacterium Archaebacteria Unicellular Reproduce by binary fission Live in extreme environments such as a hot spring or mammalian intestines Live in extreme environments such as a hot spring or mammalian intestines Very basic Eubacteria “eu”=true unicellular reproduce by binary fission most bacteria (complex) that affect our lives:  those that cause tooth decay those that cause tooth decay  food poisoning food poisoning  turn milk into yogurt turn milk into yogurt greatest number of living things on the planet

Kingdom: Protista mostly single celled eukaryotes (possess membrane bound organelles in cells as well as a nucleus) some multicellular- example: giant sea kelp look like plants but are not because they lack specialized tissues more than 50,000 species- everything eukaryotic that does not fit into fungus/plant/animal group is classified into the protist kingdom

Kingdom: Animalia eukaryotic, multicellular most have symmetrical body organization move about the environment obtain nutrients through ingestion of other species (plants, fungi, other animals)

Kingdom: Fungi both unicellular and multicellular absorbs nutrients from the environment, does not actually ingest them 100,000+ species- examples: mushrooms, molds, mildews, yeasts

Time for a quiz! Question 1Question 6 Question 2Question 7 Question 3Question 8 Question 4Question 9 Question 5Question 10

Question 8 Back to Quiz True or false: Sharks, since they do not have actual bones, are a member of the Kingdom Protista. a.TrueTrue b.FalseFalse

Question 10 Back to Quiz The five kingdoms are: a.Plants, Molds, Mushrooms, Animals, InsectsPlants, Molds, Mushrooms, Animals, Insects b.Animalia, Protista, Plantae, Molds, FungiAnimalia, Protista, Plantae, Molds, Fungi c.Plantae, Protista, Animalia, Fungi, BacteriumPlantae, Protista, Animalia, Fungi, Bacterium d.Bacteria, Eukaryotes, Plants, Molds, AlgaeBacteria, Eukaryotes, Plants, Molds, Algae

Oops! That is the incorrect answer. Go back to the quiz and try again.

Correct! Good job! You must really know your kingdoms!
