8 Symbolism Symbolism is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent something else in literature.

9 Satire Satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

11 As we read: You will need to take notes on the symbols we discuss. You do not need to copy the slides word for word but you will need to take enough notes to understand each symbol.

12 Setting Just outside of Boston, Massachusetts Near a wooded swamp Importance of setting:  This swamp is the place where characters must confront the nature of their own beings and moral makeup.

13 Characters Tom Walker  “A meager, miserly fellow,”  Dislikes his wife Tom Walker’s Wife  “A miserly woman”, “a tall termagant”, “fierce of temper”, “loud of tongue”, and “strong arm” Old Scratch  The devil, goes by many names, “a shock of coarse black hair, that stood out from his head in all directions”

14 Shortcut Shortcuts are rarely good ideas. This symbolizes the shortcuts to wealth that could possibly be “ill-gotten.” The shortcut is hard to navigate and confusing, much like the conscious of Tom Walker. The lines that show this are:  Lines 39-42

15 The Swamp Tom takes a shortcut through the swamp The swamp symbolizes pride, moral decay, and shortcuts The lines that show these are:  Lines 38-40  Lines 94-102

16 Rotten Tree This symbolize the moral decay of society. This also symbolizes the lack of substance in Tom Walker’s life. The lines that show this are:  Lines 96-100

17 Old Scratch Old Scratch is the Devil The Devil symbolizes temptation The lines that show this are:  Lines 128-131

18 Tom Walker Tom Walker symbolizes the greed of society and how easy it is for some people to succumb to temptation. The lines that show this are:  Lines 53-54  Lines 232-235

19 Tom Walker’s New House This symbolizes the emptiness of his life and how fake it is. The outside appears rich but the inside show that he has no substance. The line that show this are:  Lines 269-272

20 The Bible The bible under the mortgage papers symbolizes how money was far more important than anything else to Tom Walker. He cannot find the thing that he thinks will save him. The lines that show this are:  Lines 321-323

21 Storyboard Assignment You will be creating a storyboard with a minimum of six squares. Your job is to start at the beginning of the story and move to the end, recording in both words and pictures the storyline of “The Devil and Tom Walker.” Storyboard Must include:  Title with Setting (box 1)  Tom Walker (box 2)  Tom Walker’s Wife  Old Scratch  At least two symbols (explain them) Each Box Must Include:  Illustration with description/significance
