1 Long-Term-Memory © POSbase 2003Contributor In long-term memory (abbreviated as LTM), information is stored from seconds to years, until its retrieval. Input to LTM is information from short-term memory.memory Often, a process of consolidation is assumed to enhance storage of information (Müller & Pilzecker, 1900).

2 Long-Term-Memory © POSbase 2003 LTM‘s capacity is very large, and some studies suggest that all information ever encountered is stored in LTM, but that it is difficult to retrieve it (Penfield, 1959). LTM is not perfect because we forget information (Ebbinghaus, 1885), and new information may change the contents of LTM (Loftus & Palmer, 1974).forgetEbbinghaus, 1885

3 There have been many distinctions between several forms of long-term memory: Long-Term-Memory © POSbase 2003  Explicit versus implicit memory Explicit versus implicit memory  Episodic, semantic, and procedural memory Episodicsemantic  Declarative versus procedural memory  Verbal memory versus visual memory
