DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Forces and Motion Motion > Describing Motion

Describing Motion – The Big Ideas Motion is a change in the position of an object. An object’s speed of motion is measured by the amount of time taken to travel a specific distance.

Describing Motion – Prior Knowledge Students are fascinated by objects in motion. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Making Things Move, to review forces and motion. It will also be helpful if students have: Making Things Move observed or interacted with toys and other objects that move and stop.

Describing Motion – Common Misconceptions If a body is in motion, there is a force acting upon it to keep it going. –Reality: Newton's first law of motion states that a force is not needed to keep an object in motion. An object in motion on a surface does not come to a resting position because of the absence of a force. The object stops because of the presence of a force, which is the force of friction. Objects in motion will always stay in motion. –Reality: Newton’s first law states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by another force, such as friction.

Describing Motion – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Describing Motion. Exploration: Describing MotionDescribing Motion Reading Passage: Slow MotionSlow Motion Video: Measuring the Motion of an ObjectMeasuring the Motion of an Object Video: Newton’s First Law of MotionNewton’s First Law of Motion Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Describing Motion – Instructional Ideas Have students write an acrostic poem about motion. –Each poem should include scientific facts, such as types of forces. Watch the video, Let's Move It: Newton's Laws of Motion.Let's Move It: Newton's Laws of Motion –Have students take notes that describe each law of motion and include examples shown in each video segment.

State standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Motion, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
