2 Day 18 oh no guys its bad. it looks like many of our sixth-grade teachers followed us to the seventh grade too moaned pauline puerile in dejection

3 Vocabulary for Week 6  dejection- (noun) a sad and depressed state; low spirits: “he was slumped in deep dejection”

4 Everyone Some Thesis Most

5 Everyone  A broad general statement starting with EVERYONE can get any essay started.  – Everyone likes to text.  If you think you can, try to start with a pattern 6 starter followed by “everyone.”  – Fingers flying, buttons clicking, everyone likes to text.

6 Most  Move from a really broad statement to a slightly more focused one.  Start it with “Most.”  Most teenagers use texting as their main form of communication.

7 Some  Move to another level of specificity. Start your third sentence with “Some.”  Some teenagers try to continue this type of communication while driving or while at school.

8 Thesis Your final sentence of your introduction should be your thesis statement. It should be the most focused statement in your introduction. This should also be the easiest part of your intro. You can copy part of the prompt and add your three points.

9 Thesis statement Cell phones should be banned in the classroom because they cause distractions, encourage cheating, and serve as a status symbol. Your thesis= Opinion + because + three reasons

10 Put it all together… Fingers flying, buttons clicking, everyone likes to text. Most teenagers use texting as their main form of communication. Some teenagers try to continue this type of communication while driving or while at school. Cell phones should be banned in the classroom because they cause distractions, encourage cheating, and serve as a status symbol. And you have an introductory paragraph!

13 Semicolon Rule # 1  Use semicolons to join two INDEPENDENT clauses that are not joined by a FANBOY.  Make sure they are CLOSELY related. – Related : I called Erin; she is my sister-in-law. – Unrelated : I called Erin; did you notice it was raining this morning?

14 Rule #2  Use semicolons to separate items in a series that ALREADY have commas in them. Example : I hope one day to visit Madrid, Spain; Rome, Italy; London, England; and Berlin, Germany.

15 Rule #3  Use semicolons to join INDEPENDENT clauses when there is a transitional phrase or a CONJUNCTIVE ADVERB connecting them. Example : Dad got snacks ready; meanwhile, Mom set up the surprise movie. Example : David got a new job; as a result, his wife was able to quit hers.

18 Exit Ticket  Why are semicolons important in your writing?  Semicolons look like they are two types of punctuation combined– what are those two types of punctuation?  For your exit ticket, write three sentences– each one needs to use a different semi-colon rule.  Label the rule.
