1 GEOGRAPHY AND EARLY CIVILIZATIONS LT: I can begin to understand analyze examples of the different ways that geography impacted the development of early civilizations.

2 Entry Task  What sort of Geographic features do you think could impact early civilizations?  In what ways could Geography impact the development of a civilization?  Which features would provide benefits?  Which features could limit a civilization?

3 Geographic Impacts  Geographic features that could impact civilizations: Rivers Valleys Fertile lands Access to water Salt or fresh? Which would be more useful? Why? Are there any uses for the other type? Deserts Mountains

4 Geographic Impacts  Location  Geographic features could limit where people could settle and build cities.

5 Geographic Impacts  Food:  What food was available (plants or animals)  What food could be grown

6 Geographic Impacts  System of Government:  Depending on where people could settle, the type of government was different  Which would most likely have a more centralized form of government: cities that were in a general area with easy access to each other or cities divided by physical features such as deserts or mountains?  Why? How would the physical features lead to a more or less centralized government?

7 Geographic Impacts  Economics  Different areas had different natural resources.  Some would trade for other resources and use the seas and rivers as ‘highways’

8 Textbook Activity  Textbook packets  Choose a reading.  All detail how geography impacted the development of an ancient civilization.  Read your selection and answer the corresponding questions.

9 Textbook Activity  Meet with the people who read the same section as you.  Compare answers to questions
