3 Past Simple is used to talk about things that happened in the past – in stories, for example He read a book.He looked at the vase. He opened the vase. He was surprised!

4 In the Past Simple there are two groups of verbs. regular verbsirregular verbs

5 For r rr regular verbs, just add – –– –ed. I work ed in a restaurant last summer. (work -> worked) Dana wash ed her dog this evening. (wash -> washed) We play ed tennis two weeks ago. (play -> played) My friend called me last night. (call -> called) Steve watched zebras and crocodiles. (watch -> watched) They wanted to visit Spain. (want -> wanted)

6 Verbs ending with consonant + y y -> ied David studied in Tel Aviv. (stud y -> studied) In verbs ending with C-V-C – we double the last letter. Tom s top ped near the house. (stop -> stopped) We p lan ned to go to Kenya. (plan -> planned) In verbs ending with –e add -d -e -> -ed I liked the book. (like -> liked)

7 For i ii irregular verbs, use the list of irregular verbs, or remember them. go -> went have -> had do -> did take -> took see -> saw make -> made read -> read write -> wrote …

8 Remember the past forms of the verb B BB BE ! be I was he was she was it was you were we were they were

9 For a negative sentence, add a helping verb didn’t didn’t I didn’t work in a restaurant last summer. didn’t Dana didn’t wash her dog today. didn’t We didn’t go to the cinema. didn’t David didn’t do his homework. didn’t She didn’t like the new dress.

10 For a question, add a helping verb did in the beginning of the sentence. Did Did Mike work in a restaurant last summer? Did Did Dana wash her dog today? Did Did they go to the cinema? Did Did the students do their homework? Did Did she like the new dress?

11 For a WH- question, add a helping verb did in the beginning of the sentence after the WH- question word. When did When did Mike work in a restaurant? What did What did Dana wash today? Where did Where did they go? How long did How long did David do his homework? Why didn’t Why didn’t she like the new dress?

12 For a WH- question about a subject, replace the missing information with the WH- question word. Who Who worked in a restaurant? Who washed his dog Who washed his dog today? Who went to the cinema Who went to the cinema? Who Who did his homework? Who Who didn’t like the new dress?
