1 Cell Energy

2 All cells need energy to live, grow, and reproduce
All cells need energy to live, grow, and reproduce. Plants get their energy from the sun. Many animal cells get the energy they need from food.

3 From Sun to Cell Nearly all of the energy that fuels life comes from the sun. Photosynthesis is the process where plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food. This food that plants make (called glucose) also becomes a source of energy for other organisms that eat the plants.

4 Getting Energy from Food
Animal cells have different ways of getting energy from food. One way is called cellular respiration. Cellular Respiration is the process where cells use oxygen to produce energy from food. Many cells can get energy from food without using any oxygen. This process is called fermentation. Breathing provides the oxygen needed for cellular respiration.

5 Chemical Equations

6 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Both processes produce the materials that are needed for the other process to occur.

7 Fermentation Have you ever felt that burning sensation in your leg muscles while you were running? When muscle cells cant get the oxygen they need for cellular respiration, they use fermentation to get energy. This burning sensation in your legs is caused by lactic acid build up in your muscle cells from fermentation. Fermentation also happens in some bacteria and in yeast.
