9 The Male Reproductive System Name of PartFunction 1. Testicles (testes) -produce sperm (also produce testosterone) 2. Epididymis-tubes (one for each testicle) that connect to the vas deferens. 3. Vas Deferens-tube that carries sperm to the seminal vessicle 4. Seminal Vesicle, Prostate & Cowper’s Glands -make semen (fluid that nourishes the sperm) 5. Urethra-tube that carries semen out through the penis during ejaculation (also carries urine - but not at the same time) Pathway of sperm - animation

10 Female Reproductive System Name of Part Description of Function 1. Vagina-tube that goes from outside of body to uterus. 2. Cervix-opening from the vagina to the uterus 3. Uterus-hollow space where a fertilized egg will develop into a baby 4. Fallopian tubes -connect the uterus to the ovaries (this is where the eggs are usually fertilized) 5. Ovaries-produce, store and release eggs into the fallopian tubes (also produce estrogen) Ovulation - animation

12 Reproductive system disorders - Male Hernia – bulge in the groin area. Caused by intestines pushing through into the groin. Testicular injury – from getting hit or twisted. Steroid use – shrinks male sex organs. STIs – inflammation, sores & warts. Prostate cancer – Most common cancer in Canadian men - over 20,000 Canadians are diagnosed every year. Symptoms include painful urination and blood in urine. Detected by prostate exam (for men over 40) and blood tests. Testicular cancer – one of the most common cancers of young men. 13 Reproductive system disorders - Female Yeast infection – yeast is normal but sometimes too much grows causing an infection. Symptoms include thick, white discharge and itchines/discomfort. Treated with creams/pills. Ovarian cysts – non-cancerous sacs that van cause pain if they grow too large. Cervical cancer – can be caused by HPV (an STI). Sexually active women should have a yearly pap test to test for cancer cells. Breast cancer – most common cancer in Canadian women (1 in 9). More likely to be treatable if detected early – women should be doing monthly breast self-examinations.
