INTRODUCTION TO CELLS

I. CELL DIVERSITY A.Shape 1.Reflects function of the cell

(CELL DIVERSITY continued) B.Size 1.Giraffe – nerve cell is 2 meters long 2.Human egg cell – about size of a period at end of sentence 3.Most are microscopic

BASIC PARTS OF CELL  Plasma Membrane – outer boundary that covers cell’s surface

BASIC PARTS OF CELL CCytoplasm – all of the area and parts inside the plasma membrane but not part of the nucleus NNucleus – membrane bound structure that contains DNA

TWO BASIC TYPE OF CELLS

PROKARYOTES & EUKARYOTES  DNA as genetic material  RNA for protein synthesis  Glycolysis – breaking down glucose for energy  Ribosomes

PROKARYOTES Vs. EUKARYOTES  No nuclear membrane  Domains Bacteria & Archaea  Unicellular  Nuclear membrane  Domain Eukarya  Unicellular or multicellular

PLANT Vs. ANIMAL  Cell wall – rigid layer outside membrane  Central Vacuole – reservoir that stores large amount of water  Chloroplasts – photosynthesis takes place  No cell wall  No Central Vacuole  No Chloroplasts
