Cell Organelles
2
A cell is like a factory. It has many machines inside to make it work correctly.
The “machines” in a cell are called organelles
3
Organelles perform functions to keep a cell healthy and alive.
They are similar to organs which perform functions to keep a body healthy and alive.
4
Nucleus-control center of the cell
5
Nuclear membrane – outer covering of the nucleus, protects the nucleus
6
The Nucleus contains chromosomes with DNA.
The DNA determines the cell’s activities. The DNA determines an organism’s traits.
7
Cell membrane – outer covering of the cell
Jobs of membrane: 1. Protection 2. Selectively Permeable – Controls what goes in and out of cell.
8
Cytoplasm – jelly like liquid that holds all of the organelles
9
Mitochondria Supplies the cell with ATP energy
“Power House” of the cell. Supplies the cell with ATP energy
10
Ribosome Produces proteins
11
Vacuole – storage bins Stores water and waste materials
12
Pack and ship materials to other parts of the cell
Golgi Bodies “Packing and Shipping” Pack and ship materials to other parts of the cell
13
Endoplasmic Reticulum
“Intracellular Highway” Transport tubes Pathway of tubes that carry substances in the cell
14
Plant Cells
15
Plant cells have 3 parts that animal cells do not.
1. Cell wall 2. Chloroplast 3 Large Central Vacuole
16
Cell Wall Outer rigid protective layer of a plant cell
The cell wall is outside of the cell membrane
17
Chloroplast Has chlorophyll Performs Photosynthesis
