Quotes as Evidence Supporting Arguments

Read the statement and then determine which quote best supports the statement as evidence.

Statement: People who exercise live longer. Quote 1: “The St. Joseph’s retirement home in Milton, Vermont, is home to 25 residents over the age of 100.” Quote 2: “Recent studies have shown that heart attacks are mostly found in people who exercise less than three times per week”

Statement: Meursault does not base his behavior on what may or may not happen to his soul after death; he has his own moral code that he follows based on what he feels is morally correct. Quote 1: “[To Raymond]…but if he doesn’t draw his knife, you can’t shoot.” Quote 2: “I had only a little time left and I didn't want to waste it on God.”

Match the Quote to the Statement that it Supports Meursault experiences moments of happiness Meursault often feels uncomfortable around people who show emotion. Meursault’s emotions are often misplaced. Meursault actually has very strong opinions. “I may not have been sure about what really did interest me, but I was absolutely sure about what didn't.” “Maman used to say that you can always find something to be happy about. In my prison, when the sky turned red and a new day slipped into my cell, I found out that she was right.” “The light seemed thudding in my head and I couldn’t face the effort needed to go up the steps and make myself amiable to the crying women.” “I told her Maman had died…I felt like telling her it wasn’t my fault, but I stopped myself…it didn’t mean anything. Besides, you always feel a little guilty.”

Your Turn… Find a quote from The Stranger to support the following statement: Meursault is not emotionless. In fact, there are times when he admits to being truly happy.
