His oldest brother Hugh died from heatstroke, And he and his brother Robert were captured by the British. During their captivity, an officer slashed jackson with his sword for refusing to polish his boot, leaving lasting scars. For a time after the war he resided with his mother’s family, and in 1784 he decided he wanted to be an attorney. On his twenty-firstbirthday his friend made him his prosecution attorney.

ELECTION OF 1824 John Quincy Adams had won the election of 1824 The electoral votes were 24 for John Adams and 99 for Andrew Jackson He was supported by the democratic party V.S.

Andrew Jackson won the election with 187 electoral votes while J.Q adams lost with 83 The south voted for him because he was a common man ELECTION OF 1828 Winner! <-------

POLITICAL CONVENTIONS Andrew Jackson caused the idea of political conventions to become a reality by the 1920s, these would be held on a national level, and would decide who is the candidate for that party.

JACKSON’S CAMPAIGN When Andrew Jackson ran for president he was already a war hero, and there were “old Hickory” symbols everywhere, people would erect large hickory poles in the center of town On election day, in some places, men would march to the poles.

SPOILS SYSTEM Jackson believed that all honest men could successfully run for president and that people who stayed in office too long would take their position for granted. He dismissed many people in office and replaced him with his followers

THE KITCHEN CABINET The official cabinet of Andrew Jackson was fractured because of a despute between John Calhoun and Martin Van Buren, leaving the cabinet, obselete. So Jackson held an unofficial meeting of trusted friends and stopped holding official cabinet meetings, this was mockingly called the ‘kitchen cabinet’

JACKSONS VETOES He vetoed a bill re-chartering the second national bank because the way it was presented to him was, in his eyes “incompatible with justice”

NULLIFICATION CRISIS Jackson’s supporters were upset in 1824 that he did not win, that they pushed a tax on things like wool and textiles, and would cause people to think J.Q. adams favored his homeland of the south west

THE TRAIL OF TEARS Jackson supported Indian removal and drove the Indians out of their land There was little the indian could do to defend themselves as the south and west supported it

TREATMENT OF CHEROKEE INDIANS The cherokee indians had created their own written language and used legal action to resist relocation. However Jackson ignored the action and removed them forcefully.

DISCRIMINATION BY JACKSON Although the Cherokee Indians took legal action and said that the state of georgia had no jurisdiction over their lands, Jackson ignored and forcibly removed the indians from their lands.

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT Was made a law on May 28, 1830 It stated that the indians had no right to live in those states

CONCLUSION Andrew jackson did many things, both for and to this country. This country would have never advanced the way it did, for better and/or worse without him
