1 8.1 Answers 1A. What issues were settled between the United States and Great Britain in 1817 and 1818. The U.S. and Britain settled disputes over naval and fishing rights, the border between U.S. and Canada, and the Northwest fur trade. 1B. Why would the United States and Britain agree to occupy the Pacific Northwest together? The fur trade was valuable and both countries wanted to keep Russia out of it.

2 8.1 Answers 2A. What problems existed between Spain and the United States? The U.S. and Spain had disputes over Texas and Florida 2B. Why was the Adams-Onis Treaty important? The Adams-Onis Treaty was important because it settled all border disputes with Spain.

6 British Canada A) Rush-Bagot Agreement Both the USA and British Canada wanted to keep fishing rights on the Great Lakes so this agreement was made to limit naval power on the Great Lakes for both the USA and British Canada.

7 B. Convention of set the border between the United States and Canada at 49 degrees North latitude as far west as the Rocky Mountains. Both countries agree to occupy the Pacific Northwest together. This allowed both groups to participate the Oregon Country fur trade.

9 A.The Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 ceded Spanish East Florida to the USA.
i.USA had a dispute over the southern border with Spanish Florida. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams held talks with Luis de Onis about letting americans settle in Florida. Meanwhile President Monroe sent US troops led by Andrew Jackson to secure the border. ii.Conflict with the Seminole Indians - helped runaway slaves and raided U.S. settlements (First Seminole War). 1.Andrew Jackson goes rogue - took over most of Spain's important military posts and overthrew the governor of Florida. He never had orders from president Monroe! 2.His victories led the Spanish to negotiate and sign the Adams-Onis treaty. a.Spain gave East Florida to the USA b.USA gave up its claims to Texas and agrees to pay up to $5 million of us citizens’ claims against Spain.

10 III. Keeping the Balance -
Missouri Compromise of maintains the balance between free and slave states.

11 1. Missouri becomes a slave state.
2. Maine joins the union as a free states. 3. Slavery would be prohibited north of the Missouri Compromise land (except Missouri), and allowed south of the line.
