5 Question 1a) Study Source A. ‘What is the message of the cartoon?’ Use the details of the cartoon and your own knowledge to explain. What should my answer look like? Paragraph 1 Explain the message Eg: The message of the cartoon is… (think carefully about what point the cartoon is trying to say, ie what could it be a metaphor for?) Use a detail from the source Eg: You can see how the cartoon is trying to make this point by… (add a detail from the cartoon and explain how it shows the message) Add your own knowledge Eg: This cartoon was giving this message at this particular time because… (use your own knowledge to explain the context of the cartoon and some factual detail which helps you to explain the message) Note: What does the dilapidated house reflect about Western Europe and what is needed to stop it collapsing? What policy did the USA use to help achieve this – how much was sent? 7 marks

Paragraph 1 Paragraph 2 Explain one reason Eg: One reason they blockaded Berlin was because… For example/This was a problem because … This helped led to the blockade because… Explain a second reason Eg: Another reason was… For example/This was a problem because … This resulted in the blockade because… Note: Your reasons could include: To drive Allies out of the Soviet zones of Eastern Germany – a symbolic gesture. A reaction to the Allies combining their zones and introducing the Deutschmark in 1948. Make sure you fully EXPLAIN your reasons by adding the last sentences which link back to the question. Try to repeat the words of the question to help you focus. 8 marks Question 1b) Explain why the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin in 1948.

Eg: One major event was that they started to disagree over Eastern Europe. The Western Allies disliked Stalin’s forceful use of the Red Army to control Eastern European countries. (2 marks) Note: You could include: New leaders & resulting hostility/attitudes; Announcement of the Atomic bomb; decision to divide Germany into 4 zones; Nazis to go on trial. Remember, write a sentence for each point, NOT just individual words/phrases. Don’t make it too long. 4 marks

Remember to repeat the words of the question at the beginning and end of your explanations. 6 marks
