Body Composition Tools DEXA By: Darion and Jeni

What it Looks Like

DEXA Duel-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Scan It is a machine that measures your body composition as well as your bone mineral density Finds fat mass (% body fat), fat-free mass and bone mass Allows people to be classified as underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese Also shows if a person has signs of osteoporosis by looking at the density of all the bones in the body

What it Involves/ How to use it No more invasive than an X-ray No more radiation per scan as TSA body imaging device Sends a thin invisible beam of low dose x-rays with two distinct energy peaks through the bones. One peak is absorbed by soft tissues and organs anf the other by bone. The soft tissue can be subtracted from the total and what remains is the patients bone mineral density. Person lays face-up on a table, dressed in snug fitting clothes, while the scanning device does a single pass over the body Finds the density of your bones, as well as the tissues and fat in your body

Who Can Use it and How Trainers- can use the information from the scan to see what a client's %Body fat is in order to make them a workout program, as help them find a target weight Physician- can use it to find out patients % body fat as well as their bone mineral density. This allows them to see if the person is at risk for osteoporosis. It also allows them to put clients in categories for risk of diseases based on their % body fat Radiologist-views and analyzes x-rays Rheumatologist-deals with arthritis and joint pain Endocrinologist-diagnoses diseases related to the glands

Good Things and Bad Things Good Gold-Standard for finding body composition It allows you to find a person’s body composition and their bone density No anesthetics No radiation remains in the patients body like in x-rays Bad The machine is expensive Can be hard to find in small towns/ areas Excessive exposure can increase chance of cancer
