Red Rocks Amphitheater Denver, Colorado What can be seen in this picture? How do you think it formed? Where do you think it is?

Bellringer – The Rock Cycle

Bellringer – Rock Cycle

Minerals – An inorganic solid that occurs naturally and has a definite chemical composition and structure. Here are some of the properties of minerals: 1. Crystals: Forms of minerals that have repeating patterns 2. Luster: The way a surface reflects light 3. Streak: Color or mineral in its powder form 4. Cleavage/Fracture: Smooth surfaces—Cleavage Uneven or irregular surfaces--Fracture The way a mineral breaks apart

This scale ranks the hardness of minerals from 1 to 10, with 1 Being the softest (talc) and 10 being the hardest (diamond). 5. Hardness: Measured on the Mohs Scale

Minerals, Rocks and the Rock Cycle There are 3 types of rock! Let’s look at these 3!! 1. Igneous 2. Sedimentary 3. Metamorphic

IGNEOUS Rock Rock that forms when melted rock cools and solidifies Some form from M agma -- melted rock below Earth’s surface Some form from Lava -- Melted rock (magma) that reaches Earth’s surface Ex: Granite & Basalt

Sedimentary rock Rock formed from sediments (small pieces of broken rock) that have become compacted and cemented together Ex: limestone & sandstone ¾ of rocks on Earth’s surface

Metamorphic rock rock formed from other rock by high heat and pressure inside Earth Ex: marble & slate

How many types of rock are there? What is magma? Use the above picture to answer the questions.

Complete the following graphic organizer by placing the following terms in the correct order: magma, igneous rock, metamorphic rock, sedimentary rock, sediment magma metamorphic rock igneous rock sediment sedimentary rock
