1 Clauses vs Phrases! This is so fun!!!! (If you tell yourself that, maybe it will become true…)

2 Clause a clause is the smallest grammatical unit that can express a complete proposition(like a complete sentence). A typical clause consists of a subject (the noun preforming the action of the verb) and a verb.

3 Examples of Clauses I vomit. (I is the subject: Vomit is the verb) He woke in the wood. (He is the subject: Woke is the verb.) Got it? Those are very simple. He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes. What is the clause?

4 Two Types of Clauses: 1: Independent An Independent clause: is a clause that can stand by itself as a simple sentence. An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate and makes sense by itself.

5 Dependent A dependent clause is a clause that provides an independent clause with additional information, but which cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses either modify the independent clause of a sentence or serve as a component of it. They are marked by “dependent clause markers” like: until, when, since,while, whereas…

6 Examples of clauses! See so much fun!!!! He wondered in a cave The child led him by the hand Until they stood in a great stone room When it was light enough to use binoculars While the boy slept Now that they had food

8 Phrases A phrase is two or more words that do not contain the subject-verb pair necessary to form a clause.subjectverbclause They can have a subject or a verb but not both Phrases can be very short or quite long.

9 Examples of phrases After lunch The small handful of empty cartridge casings When on the road On the outskirts of the city Red hat After slithering down the stairs and across the road to scare nearly to death Mrs. Philpot busy pruning her rose bushes
