2 A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, idea or feeling. WHAT IS A NOUN?

3 A proper noun is a noun that needs a capital letter. For example, Sally, because Sally is the name of a specific person. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE NOUN THAT NEEDS A CAPITAL LETTER?

4 A pronoun is a word that can take the place of a noun or other pronoun. For example, instead of saying Bob is going to the mall, we can say, he is going to the mall. WHAT IS A PRONOUN?

5 An antecedent is a word to which the pronoun refers to in a sentence. For example, Sally left her jacket in the car. Her is the pronoun and Sally is the antecedent because her refers back to Sally. Sally forgot her coat in the car. WHAT IS AN ANTECEDENT?

6 An action verb is a word that communicates what the subject of the sentence is doing. An example of an action verb is runs. He runs home every day after school. WHAT IS AN ACTION VERB?

7 A being verb is a word that is derived from the verb “to be” and is not an action that can be witnessed. For example, He feels sad. Feels is a being verb since we cannot actually see him feeling a certain way. WHAT IS A BEING VERB?

8 An adjective is a word that modifies or describes a noun, pronoun or other adjective. WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE?

9 An example of an adjective is thin. The thin cat looked hungry. Thin is describing the cat. WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN ADJECTIVE?

10 An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. WHAT DOES AN ADVERB DO?

11 In the fast race, the boy ran quickly. The adverb in this sentence is quickly because quickly tells or describes how the boy ran. What is the adjective in this sentence? WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN ADVERB?

12 A conjunction is a word which joins words, groups of words, or sentences together. Some examples of conjunctions are: and, but, or, nor, although, since. The car crashed and burned. WHAT IS A CONJUNCTION AND WHAT DOES A CONJUNCTION DO?

13 An interjection is a brief remark or an exclamation at the beginning of a sentence. Interjections are followed by either a comma or an exclamation mark. For example, Whew, I am tired. Ouch! The bee stung me! WHAT IS AN INTERJECTION?

14 A preposition is a word that relates a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence. For example, the book is on the table. On is the preposition that tells where the book is in relation to the table. WHAT IS A PREPOSITION?

15 The cat and the dog were cold in the rain. WRITE A SENTENCE USING A CONJUNCTION AND UNDERLINE THE CONJUNCTION.

16 The subject of the sentence is the who or what the sentence is about. Sally, the girl with the red hair baked a cake in Foods class. Sally, the girl with the red hair is the subject of this sentence. WHAT IS MEANT BY THE SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE?

17 The predicate of the sentence is the verb of the sentence along with other information that tells what happens in the sentence. Sally baked a cake in Foods class. WHAT IS THE PREDICATE OF A SENTENCE?

18 The simple subject is just the noun or pronoun in the sentence who the sentence is about and who does the action. Sally, the girl with the red hair baked a cake in Foods class. Sally is the simple subject. WHAT IS THE SIMPLE SUBJECT?

19 The simple predicate is just the verb in the sentence. Sally, the girl with the red hair baked a cake in Foods class. The word baked is the simple predicate. WHAT IS THE SIMPLE PREDICATE?

21 Declarative: This sentence makes a statement and ends with a period. Interrogative: This sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark. Imperative: This sentence makes a request or expresses a command and either ends with a period or an exclamation point. Exclamatory: this sentence is said with strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark. WHAT ARE THE FOUR SENTENCE TYPES AND EXPLAIN EACH.

23 A simple sentence is a sentence that has a subject and a predicate. Eg. He walks home. WHAT IS A SIMPLE SENTENCE?

24 A compound sentence is a sentence made up of two simple sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction or semi colon. He walked home and he ate a sandwich. WHAT IS A COMPOUND SENTENCE?

25 A complex sentence is a sentence made up of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses. After finishing his day at school, while the sun was shining, he walked home. WHAT IS A COMPLEX SENTENCE?

26 A compound complex sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent or subordinate clauses. After finishing his day at school, while the sun was shining, he walked home and he ate a sandwich. WHAT IS A COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE?

27 An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone and make sense by expressing a complete idea, while a subordinate clause is a clause that cannot stand alone because it does not express a complete idea and needs to be combined with an independent clause to make sense. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND A SUBORDINATE CLAUSE?

28 A phrase is a group of words that doesn’t have a subject or predicate and is used to add greater detail in a sentence. He walked home. He walked home along the sidewalk. Mark sat. Mark sat on the chair. WHAT IS A PHRASE?
