1 Habits of Mind The following slides describe the habits of mind standards that our district is implementing with all students. At grade 3 we will focus on Persistence, Thinking Interdependently and Thinking Flexibly.

2 Why Emphasize Habits of Mind? WILSON AND CONYERS Habits of Mind (Cognitive Assets) produce higher student achievement. Habits of Mind produce more reflective student behavior so students take more responsibility for their behavior. We are what and how we think.

3 It is the Habits of Mind (Cognitive Assessments) that develop our capacity to think effectively. WILSON AND CONYERS Frontal Lobe Parietal Lobe Occipital Lobe Temporal Lobe Brainstem Cerebellum

4 WILSON AND CONYERS Habit # 1 Metacognition is the overarching umbrella for developing all Habits of Mind

5 Habit # 2 Persisting: Stick to it. See a task through to completion and remain focused WILSON AND CONYERS

6 Habit # 3 Managing Impulsivity Take your time. Think before you act. Remain calm, thoughtful and deliberate.

7 Habit # 4 Listen with Understanding And Empathy Devote your mental energy to another person’s thoughts and ideas. {Bracket} your own thoughts so you can better understand another’s point of view and emotions.

8 Habit # 5 Thinking Flexibly-- Find Ways to: Change your perspective and opinions. Generate alternatives. Consider options

9 Habit # 6 Creating, Imagining, Innovating Try a different way of thinking and/or doing. Generate novel ideas and seek fluency and originality. WILSON AND CONYERS

10 Habit # 7 Responding with Wonderment and Awe: Let yourself be intrigued by the new and different. Find what is awesome and mysterious in the course of study and world.

11 Habit # 8 Taking Responsible Learning Risks: Venture beyond the boundaries. Live on the edge of your competence. WILSON AND CONYERS

12 Habit # 9 Finding and Using Humor Appropriately Look for the whimsical, incongruous and unexpected. Laugh at yourself. Laugh with, not at, others. Avoid mean teasing, practical jokes and bullying.

13 Respect the thinking of those who see things through different lenses. Truly work with and learn from others in reciprocal situations. Work together Habit # 10 Thinking Interdependently WILSON AND CONYERS

14 Habit # 11 Remain Open to Continuous Learning Learn from experiences. Don’t be so proud that you can’t admit you don’t know something. Resist complacency. WILSON AND CONYERS

15 Habit # 12 Strive For Accuracy Check it again. Nurture the desire for exactness in thought, word and deed. Value quality controls.

16 Habit # 13 Questioning and Posing Problems Develop a questioning attitude Consider what data is needed and choose strategies as a result of the data. Ask, how can I get more data or information? WILSON AND CONYERS

17 Habit # 14 Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations Use what you learn. Access prior knowledge and transfer that knowledge beyond the current situation. Integrate valid and new conclusions into your present thinking. Integrate new information and concepts as you draw conclusions. WILSON AND CONYERS

18 Habit # 15 Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision. Be clear and precise. Strive for accurate communication in both written and oral form. Avoid overgeneralizations, distortions and deletions. WILSON AND CONYERS

19 Habit # 16 Gathering Data Through All the Senses. Use your natural pathways: Olfactory Tactile Kinesthetic Auditory Visual Gustatory Be observant WILSON AND CONYERS

20 Every day at school, students are expected to use the Habits of Mind. Therefore, isn’t it important to teach them every day?
