2 1. VERBS are the words that show the subject’s ACTION in a sentence.

3 2. Verbs have FOUR principal PARTS. WALK LOVE WANT FREEZE RUN SING SEE
WALKING WALKED LOVE LOVING LOVED WANT WANTING WANTED FREEZE FREEZING FROZE FROZEN RUN RUNNING RAN SING SINGING SANG SUNG SEE SEEING SAW SEEN BE AM BEING WAS BEEN

4 3. VERBS help us to understand WHEN someone does something by using TENSE.
4. TENSE means TIME.

5 There are 3 simple tenses:
Regular Irregular PRESENT TALK RING SPELL TEACH b. PAST TALKED RANG SPELLED TAUGHT c. FUTURE WILL TALK WILL RING WILL SPELL WILL TEACH

6 5. REGULAR verbs do NOT change their original SPELLING in any tense.
6. IRREGULAR verbs DO CHANGE their spelling in SOME tenses.

7 7. PERFECT tense verbs deal with some ACTION that has happened (or will have happened) in the PAST.
8. The PERFECT tenses ALWAYS use the PAST participle plus the words HAS, HAVE, and HAD.

8 EXAMPLES: Present Perfect Past Perfect Future Perfect
HAVE DRUNK HAD DRUNK WILL HAVE DRUNK HAS EATEN HAD EATEN WILL HAVE EATEN HAS SWUM HAD SWUM WILL HAVE SWUM

9 9. PROGRESSIVE tense verbs deal with some action that IS HAPPENING.
10. The PROGRESSIVE tenses ALWAYS use the PRESENT PARTICIPLE plus the words AM, IS, ARE, WAS, and WERE (“be” verbs).

10 EXAMPLES: Present Progressive Past Progressive Future Progressive
AM DRINKING WAS DRINKING WILL BE DRINKING IS EATING WERE EATING WILL BE EATING ARE SWIMMING WAS SWIMMING WILL BE SWIMMING

11 Verbals 1. Sometimes, VERBS function as other parts of speech. These words are called VERBALS. INFINITIVE = “to” + present tense TO SLEEP is all I want to do. (Sleep) When the students misbehave, the teacher refuses TO LOOK. (look)

12 Verbals GERUND = present tense + “ing” = a noun, not a verb RUNNING is my favorite sport. (Run) WASHING dishes is not fun. (Wash)

13 PARTICIPLE = participle
Verbals PARTICIPLE = participle RUNNING around the school building, I tripped and fell. (Run) WASHING the car, I got soaked. (Wash)
