4. 3. VERBS help us to understand WHEN someone does something by using TENSE.
4. TENSE means TIME.

5. There are 3 simple tenses:
Regular Irregular
PRESENT TALK RING
SPELL TEACH

c. FUTURE WILL TALK WILL RING

6. 5. REGULAR verbs do NOT change their original SPELLING in any tense.
6. IRREGULAR verbs DO CHANGE their spelling in SOME tenses.

7. 7. PERFECT tense verbs deal with some ACTION that has happened (or will have happened) in the PAST.
8. The PERFECT tenses ALWAYS use the PAST participle plus the words HAS, HAVE, and HAD.

9. 9. PROGRESSIVE tense verbs deal with some action that IS HAPPENING.
10. The PROGRESSIVE tenses ALWAYS use the PRESENT PARTICIPLE plus the words AM, IS, ARE, WAS, and WERE (“be” verbs).

11. Verbals
1. Sometimes, VERBS function as other parts of speech. These words are called VERBALS.
INFINITIVE = “to” + present tense
TO SLEEP is all I want to do.
(Sleep)
When the students misbehave, the teacher refuses TO LOOK.
(look)

12. Verbals
GERUND = present tense + “ing” = a noun, not a verb
RUNNING is my favorite sport.
(Run)
WASHING dishes is not fun.
(Wash)

13. PARTICIPLE = participle
Verbals
PARTICIPLE = participle
RUNNING around the school building, I tripped and fell.
(Run)
WASHING the car, I got soaked.
(Wash)
