Effective Evaluation An Educative PPT

Agenda  Why an Evaluation ?  Basic guidelines for a Speech Evaluation  Evaluating the Regular Speeches @ Club  Evaluation @ Contest  Q & A

Why do you want to evaluate a speech ?

Make the speech a better one and the make a speaker a better speaker. Objective of an Evaluation

How do we do that ?  Connect to the speaker.  Commend the things that went well  Make objective recommendations  Summarize and end on a note that makes the speaker comeback and deliver another speech.

Parts of Speech.  Content  Presentation

Content  The argument presented by the speaker, the logical flow, depth of argument, examples that were presented.  Relatability and Relevance of the speech to the audience  Logic vs Emotions  Authenticity  Memorability  Thought Provoking Points  Evaluate the argument not the subject of speech.  Never confront the idea, only speak about the support system

Presentation  The way in which it was presented.  The structure of the speech, body language, how quickly did he get to the point, voice modulation etc.  Connect with the audience  Transitions  Your CC2-CC6.  How did the delivery complement the speech ?

Slicing the Time 0’00” – 1’ 30” 3’00” – 3’30” Recommend Connect and Commend Summarize 1’30-3’00

Connect and Commend 1.Have a good opening. Preferably have a quote 2.Connect to the speaker. 3.Good things about the speech 4.Good things about the speaker (ease on stage, connect to the audience etc.. ) 5.Avoid Flattery 6.Speak about things that went well.

Recommend  Be as candid as you can be.  Don’t be hesitant to call a spade a spade.  Don’t drop your energy and enthusiasm.  Offer specific, practical and helpful feedback.  Evaluate the speech not the speaker.  The honesty and sincerity you project in the first one and half minute must help you here.

Summarize  Plan this very well.  Recommended that you start with positive touch the negative and again end on high note all in 30 secs.  Don’t start anything new.  Have an acronym if possible.  End on a high by commending the speaker.

I have only 3 mins  2 positive points  2 areas of improvements  1-2 points that made you connect to the speech

Use “I” words  In my opinion  I felt that  In summary /To Summarize  In my analysis  My recommendations

Evaluating a Speech in the Club  Read the manual  Reach out to the speaker before hand.  Ask for any concerns  Try to relate it to the previous speeches he has made (in case you have seen them)  Always connect to the previous CC speeches. For example if you are evaluating CC5, check if the learnings from CC2-CC4 are getting reflected here.

Evaluation at a Contest.  Make an impact at the beginning and the end  Pick up a point from the speech and coin a crisp statement.  Have an introductory statement handy.  Read and Re-read the ballot. Focus on  Analytical Quality  Recommendations  Technique  Summation

Evaluation at a contest  All the tips and tricks that I discussed before are with a contest in focus. Focus on them.  What makes your evaluation unique?  Pick the points that others would not have picked.  Focus on the depth rather than the breadth.
