3 VOCABULARY Emperor - Ruler; leader of an empire Napoleon – Emperor of France, 1799-1815 Napoleonic Code – laws written by Napoleon Metric system – mathematic system of numbers Nationalism – Pride in your country Debt – money you owe Centralized Government – laws controlled by the government. Olympe de Gouges (oh LAMP duh GOOZH) – the writer of Declaration of the rights of Woman (remember the Declaration of the Rights of Man)

4 Let’s Bring Napoleon Alive! France was without a leader after Louis XVI was executed. Napoleon saw the confusion the people of France were having and decided he was going to fix it! He was trained by the military and well educated.

5 And Napoleon writes: “Since one must take sides, one might as well choose the side that is victorious, the side which devastates, loots, and burns. Considering the alternative, it is better to eat than to be eaten”!

6 Napoleon Takes Over France as Emperor. More citizens had rights to property Elections were held Centralized the government (strong government) Wrote the Napoleonic code (laws to live by) Brings back French Nationalism (pride in your country) Sets up French public schools Begins an all out war on Russia, Austria, Britain, and Prussia to get more land for France. Napoleon’s ideas spread throughout Europe (revolution) Napoleon puts his family on each throne of the nations he conquers.

9 Stop and ThinK The French people supported Napoleon Bonaparte because – 1. They hoped he would adopt the ideas of the Protestant Reformation 2. Restore Louis XVI to power 3. Provide stability for the nation 4. End British control of France
