3 The Birth of a Republic Flag of Roman Republic Etruscans ruled Rome over 100 years. Rome flourished. The ruling family, Tarquins, became cruel. Romans rebelled in 509 B.C.E. and established The Roman Republic. Republic – people choose leaders and have power.

4 The Birth of a Republic Roman ArmyRoman Legionary Rome fought many wars over next 200 years. By 267 B.C.E. they controlled almost all of Italy.

5 Why was Rome so Strong? The ArmyRoman Legionary Excellent soldiers. Tough discipline. Divided soldiers into legions – small units. Armed with small sword (gladius) and spear(pilum) Every male land owner must serve in army in early days.

6 Shrewd Rulers Romans… Legionary Built permanent military bases in conquered areas. Built roads between towns. Gave citizenship to other Latins. Allowed allies to rule themselves, pay taxes, serve in military. Created loyalty of conquered.

7 Selective Service Act of 1917 The Act was passed by the Congress of the United States on May 18, 1917 creating the Selective Service System. The Act gave the President the power to draft men for military service.

8 What is the Law? Under current law, all male U.S. citizens are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Certain male aliens residing in the U.S., including those present illegally, are also required to register if they are between 18 and 26 years of age. "Willful" failure or refusal to present oneself for registration is against the law. In 1980, young men who knew they were required to register and did not do so, could face up to five years in jail or a fine up to $50,000 if convicted. The potential fine was later increased to $250,000.
