2 Use The Line Up Cards Provided (Each Side Of Paper Has Two Line-Ups) Review and go through both cards – make them official! What needs to be changed or completed? Home & Visitor Coaches Signature Players Number Duplicate Positions Duplicate Numbers? In ASA 0 and 00 are considered different numbers ~ so are 07 and 7, etc. Once they are how you want them ~ then what do you do? Give them back to the coaches so they may check them… Are they allowed to make changes? Does it count as substitutions? Once they are returned from the coaches – they are official!

3 Top of 1 st Inning: With one out, #27 Robinson gets a BB and goes to first base. Then, #77 Hits a ground ball to F4, who turns a 4-6-3 double play. Home coach comes out and notifies the plate umpire that they batted out of order. What is the call? Two Outs: #27 & #22 - Half Inning is over.

4 Bottom of 1 st Inning: With one out, #17 is at 3 rd Base & #20 is at 1 st Base. The DP gets a double and two runs score. Home coach comes out and notifies the plate umpire that they want #18 Arissa Brown to run for #24 Hannah Jones. Is this legal? How do you show the change on your line-up card? What should the umpires do? What would you rule? No outs. What happens to #48 Ruled an Illegal Player – Disqualified Is anyone out? Why?

(Removed #48/#17 from 1 st Base because they do not have a legal right to that base) Remain at 2 nd Base. No Why? Replace #48 with a Legal Substitute.

13 Bottom of 2 nd Inning: Catcher has a 2 – 2 count when the pitch comes inside and hits her in the thigh without her making any attempt to get out of the way. What should the plate umpire do? What is the mechanic? What should be ruled? The next pitch is ball four. #25 Strikes Out #22 “Actively Hinders” the catcher who throws out #28 trying to steel second base. How many out? #3 grounds out to end the inning. What’s the call?

The short stop muffs the play. The home coach comes out and wants _______________? Explain how that scenario might go… What are some things you could do when you see the play? Use the safe Signal What verbiage will you use when talking with the coach?

16 Top of 3 rd Inning (cont.): #27 hits the ball up the middle, the SS fields the ball, steps on 2 nd base, then throws the ball toward first hitting the runners helmet running from first ~ the ball goes flying over the fence beyond first base. What’s the call? What’s the mechanic? Dead Ball! What is the result of the play? Three Outs The Inning Is Over! What’s the score? What happens next?Why? V – 10 & H – 2

18 Top of 4 th Inning: #22 Singles to center field #77 Hits the ball to the pitcher #18 who gets the force at 2 nd. The visiting coach comes out and asks the plate umpire if #18 re-entered the game? Did she? How do you know? What should your card look like at this point? 55

19 Top of 4 th Inning (cont.): At this point, your card should look like this… Did #18 Re-enter? Now what? Yes! When they made their first pitch. Therefore… #18 is Legally In the Game Rule 1 “Play” & Rule 4 Sec 6 C 8a 55 NO Have They Made A Play? When?

20 Top of 4 th Inning (cont.): #1 Walks #00 Gets HBP #23 Re-enters and hits a double scoring three runs. The home coach comes out and has a conference. The visiting coach comes out and enters #37 for #55 #37 is put out at first, but moves #23 to third base. #13 Flies out to F7. End of inning… The visiting coach re-enters #55.

The visiting coach comes out and has a conference. #3 Slaps safely to first, and moves the R to 3 rd. #19 Bunts safely, loading the bases. 23 Top of 5 th Inning: The visiting coach reports that #17 will hit for #0 Why? What’s Wrong? What should the plate umpire do? Visiting coach meant #7 will hit for #0 #7 gets a double #27 bunts and there is a close play at first, as the base umpire you are unsure if the defense had their foot on the bag. Make The Call & Keep Umpiring! The home team starts yelling from the dugout “Are you crazy? You blew that call! That’s horrible!” What is the ASA way of making the call? Safe! Why Safe?You are unsure!

24 Top of 5 th Inning (cont.): When the play is over… what should happen? Perfectly acceptable to get help from your partner! Work together in order to get the correct call. Use this opportunity to explain to the coach that you are there to get the calls correct, but that you EXPECT them to come out and be professional – use appropriate tone and be aware of your body language. Ask them to come out and be courteous with their approach. Explain that if you EVER have doubt, that you are willing to go for help! BUT, the coach needs to be able to handle themselves professionally. After checking with your partner – the defense was “off” the bag! Great Call!!!

The visiting coach brings to the plate umpires attention that the wrong batter is batting. What should happen? Replace the batter with the correct one (#55): 2 – 2 count. #55 Strikes Out #13 Grounds Out #7 Flies Out End of inning… What is the score? H – 12 & V – 14

28 Bottom of 6 th Inning: Home coach goes to the plate umpire and says #25 will go to right, #3 will go to left, and they re-enter #24 and she will catch. What should you ask? Who will be Hitting Only? Or Batting Only? Is what they want to do legal? No! Why? #55 or any other player in the line-up can catch, but #24 may NOT re-enter a second time. Coach decides #4 will catch. What can they do? Why?

29 Bottom of 6 th Inning: #15 Strikes Out #4 Singles #25 gets HBP #22 Hits into an “Infield Fly.” #3 Singles scoring #4 #19 Hits a line drive off the pitcher’s head and it ricochets to the first basemen who catches it in the air. End of inning… What is the score? H – 13 & V – 14

Is this legal? What can the “Ballers” do? Visiting coach enters #8 for #23 and says she will bat… #8 pops up a bunt and doubles off #22. End of inning… No Why? Enter #8 for #17 OR #8 for #23

32 Bottom of 7 th Inning: You notice that #17, who was hit with a line drive last inning, and who’s coach said she may have a concussion, is taking warm-up pitches. What should you do? Stop the player and explain to the coach that she may NOT play anymore that game, or that day. The coach questions your response. What do you tell them? Explain that ASA has specific safety guidelines in place that prohibit an athlete suspected of having a concussion from playing any further that day. (Suggest Reading The Safety Awareness Guide – In The Rule Book) The coach puts #8 into the game to pitch.

33 Bottom of 7 th Inning: The home coach re-enters #28 to bat. #28 is HBP in the same spot as before and leaves the game. The visiting coach yells out from the dugout, “that’s an out, they don’t have anymore subs!” That upsets the home coach who starts yelling at the visiting dugout. After the situation is settled down… What are the options for the home coach? #25 Hits into a double play #22 Strikes out. Game Over… What is the score? H – 13 & V – 15 What are some things the umps can do to maintain control in this type of situation? Re-enter #4
