Reading Comprehension Presented by Carey Seeley, Chris Allmann and Kelly Oltman

Why focus on comprehension?  Students need to go beyond decoding- reading the words in the text fluently.  Any discussion you have about books is great, but asking deeper questions is important.  Common core standards are much more demanding today.

My child finished reading the book- now what? Use the context to learn new words Describe character traits use evidence from the text Help your child understand the author’s message

Fables by Arnold Lobel

Read the story Crab and Lobster.

Use the context to learn new words  It is foolhardy to venture out on a day like this.  The Lobster and Crab began their voyage.  Have courage my friend. Remember we are both creatures of the sea. What helps you understand the meaning of each of these words?

Character Traits  How would you describe Crab?  How would you describe Lobster? What in the text makes you say that?

Author’s message  Fables talk about the moral of the story.  What do you think the author wants you to learn from this text?

If your child has difficulty…  Model your own thinking. I saw this word and I wasn’t sure what it meant. I was thinking about the character and I thought he reminded me of… I think the author was trying to teach us….

Other comprehension strategies  Previewing/predicting  Making connections  Questioning  Inferring  Determining Importance
